More than just a sailboat

The purchase of our sailboat is a huge milestone in Carl's recovery. This is something Carl has wanted for a long, long time. The boat is more than just a toy to us -- it is really a symbol of a fresh start and a new, healthy life. I'm having a hard time putting this into words right now, but just the fact that we actually have this boat kinda shows that he made it. Does this make sense? I don't know! We fully intended to buy a sailboat last year, but Carl was just too sick. If we had made the purchase, the boat would have just sat there. I'm glad we waited, because Surprise is the perfect boat for us. The previous owner, Mike, is so similar to Carl. He engineered all kinds of upgrades and special features that make Surprise one-of-a-kind. If Carl ever has an opportunity to post (he is insanely busy right now), I'll let him tell you all the details. I'm sure it goes without saying that we'll be spending a lot of time sailing this summer. The one caveat is that my sailing skills are limited. I tried taking a class last July, but it didn't go over so well. On day one, there was no wind. On day two, the instructor took us out on the water and expected us to demonstrate skill. What!!!?? I wound up getting a refund, and decided that that particular sailing school is not for me. Anyway, I have since heard of some other learn-to-sail options in Portland and will take advantage of them asap. Meanwhile, we are looking forward to taking our friends and family sailing, so please don't be shy -- let us know if you want to go.

Absolutely beautiful! Geoff's "fresh start" was a new puppy. Payton (after Walter Payton who had PSC) has been with Geoff since the day he got home from the hospital back in 99'.

Dawn/Carl,

It is a beautiful boat! This is wonderful and something that you both deserve. You'll literally be sailing the high seas this summer! And what better place to do so than in the PNW.

Love,

Renee

It makes perfect sense. And it's a beautiful boat.

Dawn,

Sailing looks like a perfect way for you to move forward in recovery. It's very similar to how I used my bicycle.

I bet you'll learn how to sail the boat in no time, once you find the right instructor.

Have a great summer!

Dawn,
I'm looking forward to hearing from both you and Carl about your summer sailing adventures.
